Frequently asked questions
What is Babele leather?
Babele is an Italian vegetable-tanned cowhide in the broader Tuscan veg-tan tradition that includes Buttero, Barenia, and Minerva. It's substantial, smooth-handed, and finished to age with a hand-rubbed patina over time.
How does Babele compare to Buttero?
Both are Italian veg-tans with patina-developing character. Buttero (Walpier) is the better-known name and tends to be a touch denser; Babele is similarly substantial but with a slightly different grain feel. Customer preference between the two often comes down to which color or finish reads better with a specific watch.
Does Babele develop a patina?
Yes. Daily wear darkens the leather, brings out the grain, and develops a hand-rubbed sheen. The patina takes a few months to start showing and continues developing for years.
How do I care for a Babele leather strap?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged water exposure and harsh cleaners. Light conditioning once a year is fine but rarely necessary — the leather's natural oils and the oils from your skin handle most maintenance.
What lug widths and strap lengths are available?
Any lug width from 8mm to 30mm in 1mm increments, and lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). Use the Lug Width Finder if you don't know your watch's lug width, and the Bespoke Fit Calculator to dial in length.
