Teal blue shell cordovan watch strap for a Cartier Tank Américaine, full strap

Shell Cordovan Strap for a Cartier Tank Américaine

A deployant clasp changes what the strap under it has to be. It has to fold, it has to sit flat against the wrist without a padded ridge fighting the clasp plates, and the short side has to be long enough to disappear underneath. This order was a shell cordovan strap for a Cartier Tank Américaine ref. 2521, and every choice on it followed from the clasp.

The owner also asked a fair question we get a lot: whether quick-release spring bars would work on this watch, and said to fall back to the standard fitting if not. That is the right way to order when you are unsure.

Why these choices

Teal blue shell cordovan watch strap for Cartier Tank Americaine, minimal stitching

Flat padding and minimal stitching are not styling calls here, they are clearance calls. A padded strap under a folding clasp stacks height on the underside of the wrist, and a heavy stitch line adds a seam exactly where the clasp plate closes. Taking both down keeps the deployant sitting where it should. The matching stitch color finishes the job by keeping the eye on the leather rather than on a contrast line running the length of a dress strap.

Shell cordovan is the right hide for that flat build. It is an equine leather, tanned by Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Japan, and it is denser than cowhide and almost non-creasing. A leather that does not crease is worth a great deal on a strap with no padding to hide behind, because the surface is doing all the work. The teal blue reads close to black in low light and shows its color in daylight, which suits a rectangular dress case.

Questions we get

Will a shell cordovan strap for a Cartier Tank Américaine work with a deployant?

Yes, and it is a good pairing, as long as the strap is specified for it. Ask for flat padding and keep the stitching light. Tell us the clasp width as well as the lug width, because on a deployant build those two numbers are usually different.

What if I am not sure my watch takes quick-release bars?

Say so in the notes and give us a second choice, the way this customer did. We would rather fit standard bars that we know will work than guess at a quick-release that will not.
