Racing Strap for Hamilton American Classic PSR

A customer in England wanted a racing strap for a Hamilton American Classic PSR, but with one detail a standard strap does not have: a 10mm (0.39 in) cut-out in the middle of the lug end. Off-the-shelf racing straps come with a straight, full-width end, so there is nothing to buy that already has that gap. We built this one from scratch in dark green crocodile, with large racing perforations and the center cut-out made to the customer's measurement.

The build

Why these choices

The center cut-out. The request in the order was simple: the strap should have a 10mm cut-out in the middle of the lug end. That is the same idea behind our custom notched straps: take material away exactly where the case would otherwise get in the way, and leave the rest of the strap at full width. Because the cut is made to a measurement, the customer's number is what we work from. If you are planning something similar for your own watch, measure the case directly, or have a jeweler do it, before you order.

Racing perforations on crocodile. Racing straps carry racing-inspired perforations, and this one uses the large-hole pattern. Most racing builds pair the holes with contrast stitching; here the customer chose matching side stitching, so the holes do the visual work and the green reads as one color from lug to tip. Crocodile softens with wear and develops a hand-rubbed patina, which suits a strap meant to be worn daily. More options are in our crocodile leather watch straps.

Length and hardware. At 80/130mm, the strap runs a little longer than our 75/125mm default on both sides. The 18mm buckle width with a tapered tip keeps the tail end neat. One note on terms, because it causes confusion: a "Curved" buckle is a buckle style, chosen instead of our Classic or Slim buckles. It has nothing to do with a curved-end strap, and this strap's end is cut straight apart from the center notch. Regular spring bars mean tool removal rather than quick release.
