Open-Ended Strap for a Bertucci A-4T
Share
Some cases will not let a strap through. The bar between the lugs is fixed in place, so there is no way to thread a conventional two-piece band onto it and no way to get a spring bar tool in behind. The answer is an open-ended strap: the ends are left open and wrap around the fixed bar instead of passing through a closed loop.
This order was an open-ended strap for a Bertucci A-4T in black Swift calf. The owner named the watch in the notes and ordered the open-ended build, which is the tell that the case has fixed bars.
Build sheet
| Watch | Bertucci A-4T |
|---|---|
| Style | Custom open-ended, for fixed spring bars |
| Leather | Black Swift calf |
| Strap length | 75/125 mm (3.0 in / 4.9 in) |
| Buckle width | 22 mm |
| Buckle | Classic, stainless steel |
The 22 mm is the buckle end. It is not the lug width, and the order did not carry one, so we are not printing a number for it. On an open-ended build there is also no spring bar choice to make, because the bar in the case is not coming out.
Why these choices
Open-ended is not the same problem as a curved end or a notch, and it is worth being clear about which one you have. A curved end is for a case with curved lugs, where the strap end has to be cut on an arc. A notch is for a case where something is in the way. Open-ended is specifically for a bar that does not come out. If you can push a spring bar out with a tool, you do not need this build.
Swift is a smooth calf, softer than Epsom and with more depth to its color. On a field watch that gets worn rather than admired, the softness is the practical part: an open-ended strap has to bend tightly around the fixed bar right at the case, and a stiff hide fights that bend and stands proud of the lugs. Black keeps a tool watch looking like a tool watch.
Length went out at 75/125 mm, the standard split, since nothing in the order asked for more reach.

Questions we get
How do I know I need an open-ended strap for a Bertucci A-4T?
Look at the bar between the lugs. If it is part of the case and has no spring-loaded shoulders to compress, it is fixed, and a closed-loop strap will never go on. If a spring bar tool moves it, you have a standard fitting and a normal strap will fit.
Does an open-ended strap feel less secure?
It is fastened around the bar rather than threaded through it, so there is a closure at each end holding the wrap shut. That closure sits under the case and is not something you feel on the wrist.
If your watch has fixed bars, start with the open-ended strap builder and give us the case measurements. You can also look at the Swift leather straps, our black leather watch straps, or the full custom leather watch strap range. Everything is made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks to delivery.
