Corner-Notched Strap for Raymond Weil Othello

The Raymond Weil Othello is a flat, closed-case dress watch: the strap has to drop into a recess between the lugs rather than sit under them, and a standard straight-cut end will not go in. An order from England arrived with the cut already measured — 21mm across, 16mm at the notched shoulder, 5mm deep — along with an offer to post the old strap in so the original Raymond Weil buckle could be carried over. Why these choices

Corner-notching is the Cartier Santos pattern: rather than a square end, two corners are cut away so the strap reaches into a case a standard band cannot. There is no universal size for it. A, B and C are three separate measurements — the overall end width, the width across the notched shoulder, and how deep the notch runs — and all three come from the customer's own watch. We recommend having a jeweler take them. On this order the figures arrived already checked, which is why the end sits flush instead of standing proud of the case.

Black Epsom suits a flat dress case. Epsom is a stamped-grain calfskin, the same leather Hermès uses for bags, and it is light and scratch-resistant. It holds a crisp cut edge and keeps its shape rather than slumping into the lug recess the way a softer hide can. On a watch with this little clearance, the leather is doing structural work, not only cosmetic work.

The taper to 18mm and the reused buckle belong together. From the bench, the instruction on this one was simply to fit the customer's own buckle exactly as supplied — so the tail had to finish at 18mm, not near it, or the original hardware would sit loose. Carrying the watch's own buckle across keeps the piece looking factory-correct, which is usually the point of replacing a dress strap rather than restyling it.
