Frequently asked questions
What is shell cordovan?
Shell cordovan is a leather made from a fibrous membrane (the "shell") in the rump of a horse. It takes 6+ months to tan properly and yields only enough leather for a few pairs of shoes per hide. The dense structure is what gives cordovan its non-creasing, high-gloss character.
Where does your shell cordovan come from?
Shinki Hikaku tannery in Himeji, Japan. Shinki is one of the most respected cordovan tanneries in the world — they hand-finish each shell over months, and the leather has a distinctive depth and gloss prized by watch and shoe enthusiasts versus Western tanneries.
Does shell cordovan crack like cowhide?
No. Shell cordovan rolls when bent rather than creasing, so it doesn't develop the breaks-and-cracks pattern typical of cowhide. With wear it develops a slow patina and a glossy burnished sheen, but the structural integrity stays intact for years.
How do I care for a shell cordovan strap?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wear. The natural waxes in shell cordovan repel light moisture; for restoring shine, brush gently with a horsehair brush or buff with a clean cotton cloth. Avoid prolonged water exposure and harsh cleaners. Conditioner is rarely needed.
What lug widths and strap lengths are available?
Any lug width from 8mm to 30mm in 1mm increments, and lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). Use the Lug Width Finder if you don't know your watch's lug width, and the Bespoke Fit Calculator to dial in length.
