Shell Cordovan Watch Straps

Collection: Shell Cordovan Watch Straps

Genuine shell cordovan — equine leather sourced from Shinki Hikaku tannery in Himeji, Japan, hand-cut to your watch's lug width and your wrist's length. Made to order in 3-5 days, shipped from our workshop. Trusted by 1,900+ watch enthusiasts (4.7-star average across 1,970 reviews).

Shell cordovan is one of the most prestigious leathers in fine watchmaking — denser than cowhide, almost non-creasing (the leather rolls instead of folds), and burnishes to a deep glossy sheen over years of wear. The "shell" refers to a specific membrane in the horse's rump that takes 6+ months to tan properly. Our shell comes from Shinki Hikaku, a Japanese tannery known for hand-finishing each piece over months and producing leather with distinctive depth and gloss compared to Western tanneries. We cut shell cordovan straps in any lug width from 8mm through 30mm, in lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). It pairs especially well with classic dress watches: Rolex Datejust, Patek Philippe Calatrava, Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, Grand Seiko Snowflake, Cartier Tank Louis.

Use our Bespoke Fit Calculator to convert your wrist size and lug-to-lug width into the exact strap length we'll cut for you.

Not sure of your watch's lug width? Our Lug Width Finder takes brand and model and returns the right measurement, then sends you to a strap pre-set to that size.

Every shell cordovan strap is hand-cut, padded, and stitched in our workshop. See how we make a custom strap →

Frequently asked questions

What is shell cordovan?

Shell cordovan is a leather made from a fibrous membrane (the "shell") in the rump of a horse. It takes 6+ months to tan properly and yields only enough leather for a few pairs of shoes per hide. The dense structure is what gives cordovan its non-creasing, high-gloss character.

Where does your shell cordovan come from?

Shinki Hikaku tannery in Himeji, Japan. Shinki is one of the most respected cordovan tanneries in the world — they hand-finish each shell over months, and the leather has a distinctive depth and gloss prized by watch and shoe enthusiasts versus Western tanneries.

Does shell cordovan crack like cowhide?

No. Shell cordovan rolls when bent rather than creasing, so it doesn't develop the breaks-and-cracks pattern typical of cowhide. With wear it develops a slow patina and a glossy burnished sheen, but the structural integrity stays intact for years.

How do I care for a shell cordovan strap?

Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wear. The natural waxes in shell cordovan repel light moisture; for restoring shine, brush gently with a horsehair brush or buff with a clean cotton cloth. Avoid prolonged water exposure and harsh cleaners. Conditioner is rarely needed.

What lug widths and strap lengths are available?

Any lug width from 8mm to 30mm in 1mm increments, and lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). Use the Lug Width Finder if you don't know your watch's lug width, and the Bespoke Fit Calculator to dial in length.
