Frequently asked questions
What is Maya leather?
Maya is an Italian vegetable-tanned cowhide. It's dyed through (color goes all the way through the hide, not just at the surface) and finished with a buffed matte treatment that creates subtle color variations across each strap. The dye-through process is why Maya straps don't show wear-through marks the way surface-dyed leathers do.
Does Maya leather develop a patina?
Less than most veg-tans we offer. Maya is intentionally low-patina — the buffed finish locks in the color and surface character, so the strap looks largely the same in two years as the day it shipped. If you want a leather that visibly ages, choose Buttero, Barenia, or Vachetta. If you want a strap that holds its color and texture consistently, Maya is built for that.
What watches pair best with Maya?
Modern dress watches and color-friendly casual pieces where the strap is a deliberate color statement. Nomos Tangente, Junghans Max Bill, Cartier Tank for dress; Tudor 1926, Longines Heritage, vintage Seiko for casual. The available colors (Whisky, Salvia, T Moro, Dark Green, Turquoise) lean vibrant — Maya is the choice when the strap should add visual character to the watch, not blend in.
How is Maya different from other Italian veg-tans like Buttero or Barenia?
Two main differences. First, finish: Maya is dyed through and buffed to a matte color-rich surface; Buttero and Barenia have smoother, slightly oilier finishes. Second, aging: Maya is low-patina by design (color and surface stay close to original); Buttero and Barenia develop dramatic patinas over time. Pick Maya for color and consistency, Buttero/Barenia for character that develops with wear.
What lug widths and strap lengths are available?
Any lug width from 8mm to 30mm in 1mm increments, and lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). Use the Lug Width Finder if you don't know your watch's lug width, and the Bespoke Fit Calculator to dial in length.
