Shell cordovan is cut from the flat fibrous layer of a horse hide, and the cordovan we use comes from Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Japan. It is denser than cowhide and almost non-creasing, so instead of cracking into deep wrinkles it rolls into soft ripples over time. On a chronograph that gets handled and worn hard, that durability is the whole argument — it ages well rather than wearing out.
Black keeps the Big Eye formal enough for a jacket while staying true to the watch's tool-pilot roots. Minimal black stitching and a tapered profile let the depth of the cordovan carry the look; this is a leather with a wet, glassy sheen when it catches light, so a busy stitch or contrast thread would only distract from it.
