Open-Ended Strap for a Vintage Zenith: 15mm Black Lizard

A vintage Zenith with a rectangular case came in from an order in New York with one hard number attached to it: 15 mm between the lugs. Odd width, small case, and bars that a standard strap cannot thread past. That combination is why this build is an open-ended strap in black lizard rather than anything off a shelf.

Why these choices

Open-ended is the fitment answer for a watch with fixed spring bars. The strap end is left open so it slides around the bar instead of threading through a closed loop, which is the only way to dress a case where the bars are part of the lugs. Nothing about a standard 15 mm strap solves that, and forcing one on usually means bending something that should not bend.

The 15 mm width is the second half of the problem. Most makers stop at even widths, so 15 mm owners get pushed to 14 mm and live with a gap or 16 mm and live with a strap that will not seat. Cutting to the measured number is ordinary work here — the configurator runs 8 to 30 mm — but it is the reason this watch had no replacement until now.

Black lizard is the dressiest of the exotics: fine scales, small pattern, and a scale-to-case ratio that suits a small rectangular dial rather than swamping it. The strap was built flat, with no stitching and a tapered tip, so the eye stays on the scales and the case. A 12 mm slim stainless buckle keeps the tail narrow and light — on a small vintage watch, a heavy buckle reads louder than the watch itself.

How do I measure a rectangular vintage case?
Measure the gap between the inside faces of the lugs with a digital caliper, not the case width. Odd results like 15 mm, 17 mm or 19 mm are normal on pre-1970s watches and are exactly what we build to. A jeweler can confirm it in a minute if you would rather not guess.
