Grand Seiko is 19mm — and your Seiko 5 may need a notch

Two things trip people up on Seiko straps. Most of the Grand Seiko Mechanical, Quartz and Hi-Beat range runs on 19mm lugs — an odd width most makers skip, so owners squeeze a 20mm in or leave an 18mm loose. And many Seiko 5 and vintage cases sit over the strap rather than beside it: a plain strap won't tuck in, so they need a notched strap, with the corners cut away so the end slides under the case. We cut both as standard.

Prospex Land / Alpinist 20mm (some 21mm or 24mm)
Prospex Sky 22mm (some 20mm)
Seiko 5 Sports (modern) 22mm (some 20mm)
Seiko 5 vintage (SNK and similar) 18mm — often needs a notched strap
Presage 20mm
King Seiko 19mm

Custom fit and leather options

Fit options off-the-shelf straps can't give you:

  • Grand Seiko at 19mm — cut to the exact width, so the strap fills the lugs instead of a 20mm forced in or an 18mm rattling.
  • Seiko 5, King Seiko and vintage cases — where the case overhangs the strap, a plain end won't seat. Our corner-notched straps have the corners cut away so the end tucks under the case, the way the original did.
  • Prospex divers on larger wrists — sized with our extra-long straps, up to 125/185mm for wrists to 12".
  • Vintage Seiko with fixed or wire lugs — these need an open-ended strap that opens around the bar. Send a photo and we'll tell you which you need.
  • Reuse your Seiko buckle — pick “use your own buckle,” send a photo, and we punch the strap to fit it.

Getting the length right: measure your best-fitting strap — the short (buckle) side and long (tail) side, each from the lug — and enter those numbers, or use our Bespoke Fit Calculator.

Which leather suits your Seiko

Diver and tool (Prospex, SKX, Turtle, Seiko 5 Sports) — shark, stingray, ostrich leg or crocodile, usually 20–22mm.

Field and heritage (Alpinist, King Seiko, vintage) — Buttero, Barenia or Badalassi wax: veg-tanned leathers that darken and patina with wear.

Dress (Presage, Grand Seiko) — shell cordovan, crocodile, lizard or Epsom, usually 19–20mm, cut slim so the strap sits flush under a thin case.

A note on water: leather straps are made for everyday dry wear. If you swim or dive in your Seiko, switch to rubber or fabric and keep the leather for dry land.

Seiko strap FAQ

What lug width is a Grand Seiko? Most of the Mechanical, Quartz and Hi-Beat range is 19mm — an unusual width that most strap makers skip. Some are 18mm, and the Spring Drive line runs 19–22mm depending on the reference. We cut any of them at no upcharge.

Why does my Seiko 5 need a notched strap? On many Seiko 5 and vintage cases, the case overhangs the strap rather than sitting beside it, so a plain rectangular end won't seat under the case. A corner-notched strap has the corners cut away so the end tucks in cleanly.

What about the SKX or Turtle? Most Prospex divers are 22mm, some are 20mm — check your reference. We size them to your wrist, including extra-long for a diver worn over a sleeve.

Vintage Seiko — odd widths or fixed lugs? Yes. Vintage Seikos run to widths most makers don't stock, and some have fixed bars, which need an open-ended strap. Tell us the reference or send a photo and we'll size it.
