Crocodile Strap for the Small Cartier Tank Must

The small Tank Must is a hard watch to buy a strap for, and the reason is arithmetic. Almost every aftermarket crocodile strap is cut for a men's case, which means the tail is too wide, too long and too thick for a small Tank the moment it comes out of the packet. An order from Scotland set the numbers directly instead: 75/115mm, a flat profile, and a tail finished at 14mm so the owner's existing buckle would carry over.

Why these choices

Scale size is the thing people underestimate on a small case. Crocodile and alligator are the same hide family and both soften and take a hand-rubbed patina, but a strap cut from the wrong part of the belly puts three enormous scales across a 14mm tail and the watch ends up wearing the strap. Cutting a small Tank strap means selecting a run of tiles that stay in proportion to the case, which is a sourcing decision before it is a leatherwork one.

The flat profile does the same job. Padding lifts a strap off the wrist and adds height at the lug end; on a slim rectangular dress watch that reads as bulk in exactly the wrong place. Building it flat, with side stitching in a matching thread rather than a contrast, keeps the strap reading as part of the watch instead of an accessory bolted to it.

Finishing at 14mm was the requirement everything else worked around. When a customer is reusing hardware, the tail has to arrive at the stated width exactly — a millimeter of slop and the buckle rattles. The quick-release bars were the customer's own addition, and they make sense on a watch likely to rotate between a few straps.
