Why these choices
Lizard is the dressiest of the exotics we work with. The scales are fine and closely spaced, which means the pattern reads at wrist distance without ever competing with the dial — the opposite problem to putting a large-scale crocodile under a small vintage case. On a 1940s Omega, that ratio is the whole argument: the strap should look period-correct in weight and finish, not modern and bulky.
The deployant is the reason for the 75/115 mm split. A folding clasp takes up a fixed run of leather on both sides, so a strap cut like a pin-buckle strap ends up with a tail that will not tuck. On a 6.75 inch wrist, 190 mm of total leather through a clasp is the right number, and it is 10 mm shorter than the same wrist would take on a plain buckle.
Two practical notes for anyone doing this to a vintage watch. Quick-release bars make a clasp build easy to fit and remove without a spring bar tool near a soft, old case — useful when the lug interiors are polished and unforgiving. And the 16 mm figure is the buckle end, not the lug width; on a tapered strap those are separate measurements and we cut each to its own number, so send both if you have them.
