This order from Ohio is a from-scratch leather strap for a vintage Vacheron 4600, cut to wear like the strap the watch left Geneva with seventy-six years ago.

Why these choices
That buckle measurement is the detail that gives the order away as serious: 15.875mm is 5/8 of an inch, an imperial-era size from when Swiss exports were cut to fractions for the American market. No stock strap accommodates it — the customer kept the original buckle, and the strap was cut to feed it exactly. Because this is a use-my-own-buckle order, it ships with no hardware fitted; the original Vacheron buckle goes back on at home.
The leather brief was "vintage 1950s appearance," and natural Buttero is the honest way to get there. It is vegetable-tanned in Tuscany at Conceria Walpier, dense, and it patinas — starting pale and building amber depth with wear, the same way midcentury straps aged on the wrist rather than arriving pre-distressed. The customer asked for tone-on-tone stitching "to match natural leather… running stitching, rather than zig-zag," so the thread line stays period-quiet and disappears into the strap as the patina develops.
Flat construction with a round tip completes the era: padded straps with sharp tapers are a modern dress convention, while a 34mm-class 1950s case sits correctly on a thin, flat strap.
