Yellow lizard racing watch strap for an Emporio Armani AR1696, black stitching

Racing Strap for an Emporio Armani AR1696

Yellow is a hard color to get right on a watch strap. Go too bright and it reads as plastic; go too soft and it turns beige on the wrist. A racing strap for the Emporio Armani AR1696 in yellow lizard threads that needle, because the scale pattern breaks the color up into hundreds of small facets instead of presenting it as one flat panel. This build pairs it with black stitching and a black deployant so the yellow stays the only loud thing about the strap.

Why these choices

Lizard is the dressiest of the exotics we work with. The scales are fine and close-set, which is why it flatters smaller dials rather than fighting them — a coarse skin on a modest case looks like the leather won. Using it for a racing strap is a deliberate mismatch: racing straps come out of a motorsport tradition of perforations and contrast stitching, and lizard is the last leather you would expect to find there. That tension is the point of this one.

The black stitching does the disciplining. Racing straps traditionally use a contrast thread, and on a yellow strap almost any bright thread would push it into costume territory. Black pulls in the opposite direction, and it ties the strap to the black deployant at the other end so the two hard elements bracket the color.

The deployant is worth a note of its own. An 18 mm folding clasp means the strap does not thread back through keepers every time it goes on, so the leather takes far less bending stress at the same point — which matters more on an exotic skin than on plain calf, because a scaled surface will show a hard crease sooner. It also keeps the tail from crossing the yellow with a second layer of leather. The round tip and the padded build finish the shape.

Common questions

Can I get a racing strap for an Emporio Armani AR1696 in an exotic leather?
Yes. The racing style is a construction choice, not a leather restriction — we build it in lizard, crocodile, ostrich and shark as readily as in calf. Pick the leather first, then the style.

Does a deployant clasp change how I should measure?
It does. A deployant takes up length that a pin buckle does not, so tell us you are using one when you give us your wrist measurement and we will size the two sides accordingly.

Each strap is cut and stitched to order, so allow two to three weeks to delivery. Start with the yellow lizard strap, see the rest of the lizard leather range or our yellow leather straps, or configure something else entirely in custom leather watch straps.
