Extra-Long Ostrich Leg Strap for a FERO Feldmann

A 1950s FERO Feldmann is a small watch by any modern measure — a 17-jewel Swiss mechanical from an era when 34 mm was a full-size men's watch. The problem is not the case. It is that a vintage watch of that size almost never comes on a band long enough for a large wrist, and the replacement market stops well short. Why these choices

Start with the length, because everything else follows from it. Most makers stop at 8.5 inches of wrist. Our extra-long build covers 8.5 to 12 inches, and 105/160 mm sits at the deep end of that range — 265 mm of strap in total. At that length the strap is not a stock band with extra holes punched in it. The keeper side and the tail are both cut longer, the keepers are positioned further out so the tail does not run past them, and the hole spacing is set for where the buckle will actually land.

Ostrich leg is the scaled leather from the bird's leg rather than the round body skin, so it has its own natural grain pattern and none of the raised follicle bumps people associate with body ostrich. It is a quieter, more textural surface, and in dark brown it reads as an aged-looking leather without pretending to be distressed. On a watch from the 1950s that is a better match than something high-shine.

The 16 mm buckle keeps the proportions honest. That figure is the buckle end, not the lug end. A long strap is already a lot of leather on the wrist, and running full width down to a wide buckle would make a small vintage case look stranded in the middle of it. Tapering to 16 mm with a tapered tip pulls the eye back toward the watch.
