Center-Notched Strap for Hamilton Masterpiece 8928
Share
A gold 1980s Hamilton Masterpiece 8928 is the kind of watch where a straight-cut strap simply will not seat. The case needs a cutout in the middle of the strap end, so the only real fix is a strap cut to the watch itself. This one, for an order from South Carolina, is a center-notched strap for the Hamilton Masterpiece in black sharkskin.
The build
| Watch | Hamilton Masterpiece 8928 (gold, 1980s) |
|---|---|
| Strap style | Center-notched |
| Leather | Black sharkskin |
| X: full width of the strap end | 19.5mm (0.77") |
| Y: width of the notch | 10mm (0.39") |
| Z: depth of the notch | 2.5mm (0.10") |
| Strap length | 75/115mm (2.95" / 4.53") |
Why these choices

The notch is the whole job. On a center-notched strap, three numbers decide whether the strap sits flush against the case or gaps and twists. X is the full width of the strap end, here 19.5mm. Y is the width of the piece cut out of the middle, 10mm. Z is how far back that cut goes, 2.5mm. That leaves two shoulders of roughly 4.75mm each running out to the corners, which is what fills the space between case and lugs. We cut to the customer's measurements rather than to a standard size, because widths on vintage references vary and a model name alone is not a measurement. If you are ordering for your own watch, a jeweler's measurement is worth the trip.
Sharkskin for a watch that gets worn. Shark is the toughest of the exotics we stock, with a dense, tooth-textured grain. On a gold dress watch from the 1980s that is a deliberate contrast: the case stays the dressy part and the strap brings a hard-wearing surface. Black keeps it formal enough to stay with the gold case and its era.
Length and hardware. At 75mm on the buckle side and 115mm on the tail side, the strap measures 190mm (7.48") end to end, not counting the case. The customer also asked about swapping silver hardware for gold to match the case, which is the right question to ask on a gold watch: a steel buckle under a gold case is the first thing people notice.

FAQ
Why does a Hamilton Masterpiece need a center-notched strap?
When the case extends into the middle of the strap end instead of sitting cleanly between two lugs, a straight strap end hits the case and will not lie flat. A center-notched strap for the Hamilton Masterpiece removes exactly the width and depth the case needs from the center and stays full width at the corners. Measure your own reference before ordering, since vintage cases differ.
How long does a custom notched strap take?
Each strap is made to order and built in 3 to 5 days. Allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery in total, including shipping.
