Frequently asked questions
What is Buttero leather?
Buttero is an Italian vegetable-tanned cowhide produced by Walpier (Conceria Walpier) in Tuscany. It's known for its dense smooth grain, rich color depth, and how it ages — daily wear softens the leather and develops a hand-rubbed patina.
Does Buttero develop a patina?
Yes, beautifully. Vegetable tanning leaves the leather open to absorb oils from your skin and react to UV — over months of wear, Buttero darkens slightly, the grain becomes more lustrous, and the strap takes on a hand-rubbed sheen specific to how you wear it.
What watches pair best with Buttero?
Vintage-styled, classic dress, and field watches. Rolex Datejust, Hamilton Khaki, Longines Heritage, IWC Mark XVIII, Grand Seiko Heritage all pair well. Buttero's warm character suits watches you want to age alongside.
How do I care for a Buttero leather strap?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged water exposure and harsh cleaners. Light leather conditioner once or twice a year is fine but rarely necessary — the natural oils from your skin do most of the work over time.
What lug widths and strap lengths are available?
Any lug width from 8mm to 30mm in 1mm increments, and lengths from short (5.0" wrist) through extra-long (12" wrist). Use the Lug Width Finder if you don't know your watch's lug width, and the Bespoke Fit Calculator to dial in length.
