Shell Cordovan Strap for Panerai PAM00111
Share
A Panerai case is a slab. Put a thin, floppy strap under it and the watch tips off the wrist bone every time you move your arm. The owner of this PAM00111 in British Columbia went the other way and ordered a shell cordovan strap for the Panerai — no stitching, tapered, and running into a stainless deployant clasp so the leather never has to fold back on itself.

Why these choices
Shell cordovan is equine, cut from the shell layer of a horsehide and tanned by Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Japan. It is denser than cowhide and it almost does not crease — instead of the sharp fold lines you get across a calf strap after a month, cordovan develops soft rolling waves. That density is exactly what a heavy Panerai wants underneath it. The strap stays put rather than buckling under the case.
No stitching was the right call and not just an aesthetic one. Cordovan is stiff enough to hold an edge without a stitch line doing structural work, so leaving the thread off removes the one part of the strap that shows wear first. It also keeps the surface uninterrupted, which suits a watch whose whole design language is a plain sandwich dial and a bare bezel.
The deployant clasp changes how the strap ages. A tang buckle drives a pin through the leather at one spot and that hole eventually becomes the strap's weak point. A deployant spreads the load and means the tail is never bent double. On a watch this heavy that is not a luxury — it is what keeps the strap flat after a year.
Questions we get
Does a shell cordovan strap for a Panerai need to be thick? Not as thick as people assume. Cordovan's density does the work a padded calf strap needs 5mm of filler to do, so you get support without the strap standing off the wrist.
What lug width should I order? Measure the gap between your own lugs. This build used a 22mm buckle, and buckle width is not lug width — they are separate numbers and we cut to whatever you give us.
Every strap is cut to your watch and your wrist. Start with the black shell cordovan strap, see the rest of the shell cordovan range or our black leather straps. All builds are made to order — allow 2-3 weeks to delivery.
