Shell Cordovan Strap for Grand Seiko SBGM221
The Grand Seiko SBGM221 leaves the factory on an alligator strap with an uncommon 55/125mm split, and replacements that keep those proportions are hard to come by. The owner of this GMT wanted the sizing and padded profile of the original, but in a leather the catalog never offered: teal blue shell cordovan. So we cut one to the measurements already on the watch.

Why these choices
Shell cordovan is an equine leather from Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Japan, and it behaves unlike cowhide: the fibers are denser, so the strap resists creasing where calf shows wear lines within months. On a watch that tends to stay in a collection for decades, that aging behavior matters more than first-day looks. Teal reads close to black in low light and opens up in daylight, which suits a dial as reserved as the SBGM221's.
The sizing did the quiet work here. Rather than moving to one of our standard lengths, the owner asked us to repeat the 55/125mm cut already on the watch, so the buckle sits exactly where it used to and the keeper falls in the same place. The note on the order was specific about the profile too: padding like the factory Grand Seiko alligator. A custom strap does not have to change how a watch wears; done right, it only changes the material.
Golden brown double stitching is the one deliberate departure. It picks up the warmth of the dial, and the second stitch line reinforces both edges of a strap built for daily rotation.
