Shark Skin Strap for a Vintage Seiko 6139 Chronograph

Seiko’s 6139 automatic chronographs are pushing fifty years old, and whatever strap they left the factory on is long gone. That is the situation behind this order from British Columbia: a 6139 that needed a replacement built from scratch, in black shark skin with orange side stitching picked to answer the dial.

Why these choices

Shark is the toughest of the exotic hides we cut, with a dense grain that reads as texture from a foot away rather than as a pattern. On a 1970s Seiko chronograph that is the right register: the watch is a working tool with a busy dial, and a smooth black calf strap under it looks like a dress strap that wandered onto the wrong watch. Shark gives the strap a surface without adding a competing pattern.

Orange side stitching is the one loud decision, and vintage Seiko chronographs are usually the reason for it — these dials carry orange or red chronograph hands and markers, and a matching thread is the cheapest way to tie a black strap to a colour already on the watch. It runs along the edges rather than boxed at the ends, so it reads as a line rather than a frame.

Two notes on the fittings. The buckle here is the curved style — the shape of the buckle frame, one of the options alongside classic, slim and deployant. It has nothing to do with curved-end straps, which are a different fitment for watches with curved lugs. And 16 mm is the buckle width, not the lug width: this strap tapers, so the two numbers are different and we cut each to its own spec. If you are ordering for a vintage watch, measure between the lugs with a caliper and give us that number separately.

Can you make a shark skin strap for a vintage Seiko 6139 when the original is discontinued?
Yes — that is most of what we do. Nothing is pulled from stock: send the lug width and your wrist size and the strap is cut to those numbers, whatever the watch is.

Will regular spring bars work on a watch this old?
Usually. Regular bars are tool-removal rather than quick-release, which is what most 1970s cases were designed around. If your lug holes are drilled through, mention it and we will size the bars accordingly.
