Barenia leather double tour strap for an Hermès Cape Cod, white saddle stitching

Barenia Double Tour Strap for the Hermès Cape Cod

Replacing the strap on an Hermès Cape Cod is a thickness problem before it is anything else. The case is slim, the lugs are close to the wrist, and a standard padded strap makes the watch sit up and look bulky — which is the one thing a Cape Cod must never do. This order from California asked for a Barenia double tour strap for the Hermès Cape Cod built to a specific thickness, with a specific taper, and edges painted to match the leather rather than the usual black.

Why these choices

Barenia is the right leather for this watch and not only because Hermès made it famous. It is hot-stuffed — packed with oils and waxes while the hide is still open — which comes out of the drum supple rather than stiff, and it takes a double wrap around the wrist without fighting back. It has equestrian origins and is traditionally water-resistant, so a strap that spends its life doubled against skin is not going to be ruined by a summer.

The thickness was the actual brief: 2.3–2.5 mm, flat, minimal padding, slim keepers. On a double tour the leather passes under the case as well as around the wrist, so every extra tenth of a millimetre is felt twice. Keep it thin and the Cape Cod lies flat; pad it and the watch rocks. The gentle taper from 14 mm at the lug end down to 12 mm at the buckle does the same job visually — it keeps the strap from overwhelming a slim rectangular case.

The white saddle stitch matches the original, and the edges were hand-painted in a colour taken from the Barenia itself rather than the default black. The customer asked us to “select a piece with attractive natural grain and color variation,” which is a request we are happy to get — Barenia is not a uniform leather and pretending otherwise wastes it. The buckle is the owner's own, so this strap shipped without one.

Questions we get about this build

Can you make a Barenia double tour strap for the Hermès Cape Cod in other sizes? Yes. Cape Cod cases run in several sizes and the lug widths differ, so send us the width between your lugs and your wrist circumference. Every strap is cut to those two numbers.

Can you reuse my Hermès buckle? That is exactly what happened here. Select “use my own buckle” and give us the buckle width — 12 mm on this one — and we cut the tail to fit it. The strap arrives without a buckle so you can fit your original.
